The Item System Overview

Every character has 8 equipment slots: weapon, head, chest, hands, legs, feet, ring, and amulet. Items have level requirements — you can't equip a Level 30 item at Level 10. All equipped items contribute their stats to your character every time you enter combat.

Items are obtained through four main channels:

Your inventory holds up to 40 items at launch (expandable with special bag upgrades). Items not in your inventory cannot be equipped, so managing space during dungeon runs and Blood Moon events is an important skill.

Item Rarity Tiers

Tier Color Source Stat Bonus
Common ⬜ Grey Shop, low-level drops Base stats only
Uncommon Green Shop, Lv.5+ drops +10–15% over Common
Rare Blue Dungeon D1–D5, crafting +20–30% + 1 special stat
Epic Purple Dungeon D6–D8, AH, crafting +40–50% + 2 special stats
Legendary Orange Dungeon D9–D10, Blood Moon, crafting (rare recipes) +60–80% + unique passive effect

Important: Item quality also affects how many upgrade slots it has. Common items have 0 upgrade slots. Legendary items have 3 upgrade slots for enchantments.

Weapons

Weapons are your primary source of attack damage. There are several weapon types, each with different attack speeds and damage ranges:

Swords

Balanced offense and defense. +STR damage scaling. Available to both races.

Daggers

Fastest attack speed (+2 attacks/round at max tier), lower damage per hit. +DEX scaling. Favored by vampires.

Axes

Slow but devastating. Highest damage ceiling. +STR scaling. Favored by werewolf berserkers.

Bows

Ranged — ignore 50% of enemy defense. +DEX and +LCK scaling. Useful for sniping high-DEF enemies.

Spears

Long reach — cannot be dodge-avoided. +STR scaling. Strong in PvP against high-DEX builds.

Staves

+INT scaling for skill damage bonus. Required for skill-heavy vampire builds. Weak standard attacks.

Key Weapon Milestones

Armor

Armor contributes Defense (DEF) which reduces incoming damage via the formula damage_reduction = DEF / (DEF + 50). At 50 DEF, you reduce incoming damage by 50%. Stacking DEF has diminishing returns but is extremely valuable in the early game.

Armor slots: Head, Chest, Hands, Legs, Feet

Armor Weight Classes

Class DEF Bonus Speed Penalty Best For
Light (Leather) Low None DEX builds, vampires, ranged
Medium (Chainmail) Medium -5% dodge Balanced hybrid builds
Heavy (Plate) High -15% dodge STR/END tank builds, werewolves
Robes (Cloth) Minimal +10% skill efficiency INT/skill-focused vampires

Consumables

Consumables are single-use items that provide immediate effects in combat. They do not take up equipment slots — they're stored in inventory and activated from the combat screen.

Crafting Materials

Crafting materials have no direct combat use — they exist purely as components in crafting recipes. There are 100+ different material types in the game. Key categories:

Artifacts, Rings & Amulets

Artifacts occupy the ring and amulet slots. They provide secondary stat bonuses and special passive effects that often define a character's playstyle.

Ring of Shadow Steps

Ring | Level 15+ | Rare | Vampire only

  • +8% dodge chance
  • +5% DEX
  • Passive: After dodging, next attack deals +25% damage

Moon Pack Amulet

Amulet | Level 12+ | Rare | Werewolf only

  • +6% critical chance
  • +10 STR
  • Passive: Clan bonus range increased by 20%

Aeternum Heart

Amulet | Level 40+ | Legendary | Both races

  • +15% all stats
  • +8% XP gain from combat
  • Unique: Respawn with 25% HP in dungeon (once per dungeon run)

Race Restrictions

Approximately 40% of items are race-locked. Race-restricted items provide stronger bonuses than their universal counterparts — a vampire-only dagger will out-perform a universal dagger of the same rarity tier.

The remaining 60% of items are usable by both races. When comparing gear, always check the race restriction tag in the item tooltip first.

Race-restricted items can be traded on the Auction House — you can buy them even if you can't use them. This is relevant for clans where members might craft and sell race-specific items to their counterparts.

Best Items by Level Bracket

Levels 1–15: Gear Foundation

Focus on keeping your weapon and chest slot up to date. Buy from the NPC shop every 5 levels — don't waste crafting materials on low-level gear when you'll replace it quickly. Your first priority for a crafted item should be level 15 Uncommon boots or gloves.

Levels 15–30: First Rare Gear

Start farming Dungeon D1–D3 for Rare drops. The Shadowmere Dungeon (D2) drops excellent weapons for both races. This is also when race-specific Rare items start appearing — prioritize your weapon slot first, then chest, then rings.

Levels 30–50: Epic Transition

At level 30, you can equip Epic gear. The best sources are Dungeon D5–D7 and the Auction House. Crafting becomes economically viable here — if you have the materials, crafted Epic weapons often exceed drop quality.

Levels 50+: Legendary Endgame

The endgame item hunt. Dungeon D9 and D10 are the primary sources of Legendary weapons and armor. Blood Moon event farming is essential for the unique Legendary items that can't drop outside the event. The Auction House is your best friend for filling gaps between dungeon runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use items from the opposing race?

No. Race-restricted items (marked or in the item tooltip) can only be equipped by the designated race. Universal items (no restriction marker) can be equipped by both vampires and werewolves.

What is the maximum item rarity tier in VvW?

There are 5 rarity tiers: Common (grey), Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), and Legendary (orange). Legendary items can only be obtained from high-tier dungeon bosses, Auction House, or crafting with rare Blood Moon materials.

How do I get the best items in the game?

The best items come from three sources: Dungeon D8–D10 boss drops, Auction House purchases (using gold from PvP and hunting), and high-tier crafting recipes using materials from Blood Moon events and legendary monster drops.

Can I sell items I don't need?

Yes — in two ways. You can sell items directly to the NPC shop (instant gold, based on item value) or list them on the Auction House for player-set prices. Rare+ items will almost always sell for more gold on the Auction House than at the NPC shop.

What happens to equipped items when I die in PvP?

Equipped items are never lost on death. However, they accumulate durability damage from combat. At 0 durability, an item's stats are reduced by 50% until it's repaired at the blacksmith. Always repair before important dungeon runs or PvP sessions.
