Ranked Tiers & ELO Thresholds

The VvW ranked system uses a modified ELO algorithm. Every player starts at 800 ELO (Silver I) after completing their 10 placement matches. Your ELO rises with wins and falls with losses, with the amount depending on the relative strength of your opponent. Here are all ranked tiers:

Rank ELO Range % of Players Season Reward

SEASON INFO

Ranked seasons last 4 weeks. At the end of each season, rewards are distributed based on your peak ELO (not your final ELO). Your rating is then soft-reset: your new starting ELO is the average of your peak ELO and 800. This means high-ranked players start each season above 800 but still need to climb.

The ELO System Explained

ELO gain and loss per match depends on the difference between your rating and your opponent's rating. Beating a higher-rated player rewards more ELO (up to +35), while losing to a lower-rated player costs more ELO (up to -35). The standard gain/loss against an equal-rated opponent is approximately +20/-20.

In the first 30 matches of a season, your ELO changes are amplified by 1.5x to help you reach your true rank faster. This means your placement matches and early games are the most important: a strong start can propel you hundreds of ELO points ahead.

ELO Floor Protection

Once you reach a new tier (e.g., Gold at 1,200 ELO), you cannot drop below that tier's minimum for the remainder of the season. You can drop within the tier (from Gold III to Gold I) but never back to Silver. This protection encourages experimentation at tier boundaries without fear of losing progress.

Season Rewards Breakdown

Season rewards are worth the climb. The jump from Gold to Platinum adds 2,000 gold, 25 gems, and an Epic Gear Chest. The Diamond tier rewards are even more dramatic with a Legendary Gear Chest. Grand Legend is the ultimate prize: 25,000 gold, 250 gems, an exclusive title that displays for the entire next season, and a Mythic Gear Chest that can contain the best items in the game.

Importantly, rewards are based on peak ELO. If you hit Diamond (2,000 ELO) at any point during the season and then drop to Platinum, you still receive Diamond rewards. This means you should push aggressively when you are on a hot streak and not worry about losing your peak.

Matchmaking Tips

The matchmaking system pairs you with opponents within approximately 100-200 ELO of your current rating. At higher tiers (Diamond+), the range widens due to the smaller player pool, sometimes matching you against opponents 300+ ELO apart. Understanding matchmaking behavior can help you time your sessions for optimal climbing:

  • Peak hours (evenings and weekends) provide the fastest queue times and the tightest ELO matching, meaning fairer games.
  • Off-peak hours have wider ELO gaps in matchmaking, which can work for or against you. You might face weaker opponents for easy ELO or get matched against much stronger players.
  • Early season matchmaking is chaotic because everyone is resettled. Skilled players may temporarily be at lower ranks, so expect tougher games in the first few days.
  • Late season is when the ladder stabilizes. If you are trying to push for a specific tier, the last week is the best time because matchmaking is most accurate.

Win Streak Bonuses

VvW rewards consistency with a win streak bonus system. After 3 consecutive ranked wins, you begin receiving bonus ELO per win:

  • 3-win streak: +5 bonus ELO per win
  • 5-win streak: +10 bonus ELO per win
  • 7+ win streak: +15 bonus ELO per win

A 7-game win streak can earn you an additional 105 bonus ELO beyond normal gains. This is why hot streaks are so valuable for climbing. When you are on a streak, keep playing. When you lose, take a break.

Best Builds for Climbing Each Tier

Bronze to Silver (0-1,199 ELO)

At this level, build choice matters less than execution. Most opponents do not optimize their skill rotations or understand matchup dynamics. Any build with a simple, high-damage combo will climb. Recommended: Berserker for its straightforward "hit hard, get stronger when hurt" playstyle, or Shadow Assassin for reliable burst kills.

Silver to Gold (800-1,599 ELO)

Gold players begin to understand skill timing and cooldown management. To break through, you need a build that can handle both aggressive and defensive opponents. Recommended: Moon Warrior for its versatility and sustain, or Blood Mage for its ability to punish opponents who do not know how to deal with DEF-ignoring magic damage.

Gold to Platinum (1,200-1,999 ELO)

The Platinum barrier is where most players plateau. At this level, opponents know matchups and will counter-pick if they can. You need to master at least 2 builds to cover your weaknesses. Recommended: maintain your primary build and learn a secondary build that counters your primary build's hard counters. See our PvP Tier List for the counter chart.

Platinum to Diamond (1,600-2,399 ELO)

Diamond requires near-perfect execution, gear optimization, and companion selection. At this tier, every stat point, every rune socket, and every companion skill matters. Recommended: whatever build you have mastered most thoroughly. At this level, mastery of a B-tier build outperforms mediocre play on an S-tier build. Focus on equipment set bonuses and rune synergies for that extra 5-10% edge.

Diamond to Grand Legend (2,000+)

Grand Legend represents the top 2% of all ranked players. Reaching this tier requires not just strong play but strategic session management, matchup knowledge against specific high-ranked players you will face repeatedly, and the mental fortitude to maintain peak performance over dozens of games. Most Grand Legend players play 5-10 ranked matches per day during push weeks and take breaks after any 2-loss streak.

Mental Game & Tilt Management

Tilt (emotional frustration that degrades your play) is the number one reason players lose ranks. A 3-game losing streak can easily become a 7-game losing streak if you play while frustrated. Here are the tilt management strategies that top-ranked players use:

  • The 2-loss rule: After 2 consecutive losses, stop playing ranked for at least 30 minutes. Do dailies, dungeons, or log off. Your ELO will still be there when you return.
  • Session limits: Set a maximum number of ranked games per session (10-15 is common). This prevents marathon grinding sessions where fatigue degrades your performance.
  • Review losses: After each loss, spend 30 seconds thinking about what went wrong. Was it a bad matchup, a mechanical mistake, or a strategic error? Identifying the cause prevents the same mistake from repeating.
  • Focus on improvement, not rank: If you are genuinely improving your play, your rank will follow. Fixating on the number itself creates anxiety that hurts performance.
  • Play your best time: Everyone has a time of day when they play their best. For most players, it is evening after warming up with a few casual games. Identify your peak hours and prioritize ranked play during those windows.
PRO TIP

Grand Legend players report that the single most impactful change they made was adopting the 2-loss rule. It sounds simple, but consistently stopping after 2 losses prevents the catastrophic losing streaks that send players from Diamond back to Platinum overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lose my rank tier once I reach it?

No. Once you reach a tier within a season (e.g., Gold at 1,200 ELO), you cannot drop below that tier's minimum ELO for the rest of the season. Between seasons, your ELO is soft-reset.

How many placement matches do I need?

10 placement matches at the start of each season. Your initial ranked ELO is calculated based on your win/loss record in placements combined with your previous season's peak ELO. Going 8-2 or better in placements typically starts you 200-400 ELO above your soft-reset baseline.

Does level matter in ranked?

Yes. Higher-level players have more skill points, better gear, and stronger companions. Ranked matchmaking considers both ELO and level, but in Diamond+ you may face opponents 10-20 levels above or below you. Being at max level is strongly recommended for serious ranked climbing.

What happens if I do not play ranked all season?

If you do not complete your 10 placement matches, you receive no season rewards. If you place but never play again, your peak ELO from placements determines your reward tier. There is no decay for inactivity within a season.

Are Clan Wars ELO separate from Arena ELO?

Yes. Clan Wars have a separate team-based rating system. Your arena ELO only reflects solo ranked performance.
